How to apply for a Director ID Number (DIN)

Posted On October 19, 2022

The deadline for registering your Directors Identification Number for existing Directors is 30 November 2022 and ASIC has the right to impose heavy fines for those who have not complied. (Click here to see the fines as listed by ASIC)

To help you avoid such a situation, we will be following up with clients to see if you need any assistance with obtaining and registering your Directors Identification Number. But in the meantime, you can apply for your number by following the below steps (or by following this Flowchart).

If you struggle with these steps please call the office to arrange an appointment for us to assist you with the process.

What is a Directors ID and why do I need one?

Australia’s Director Identification Number (DIN) regime came into effect on 1 November 2021 and will require all directors of Australian companies to register for an identification number. This includes if you are director of your SMSF corporate trustee or family trust.

We will need to record the Director Identification Number against your company file with ASIC. Once you have received your DIN, we ask that you email the details to us at hello@nortons.com.au.

Unfortunately, we are unable to apply for a DIN on your behalf. You must apply for your own DIN to verify your identity. We can however assist you by advising you of the steps involved or you can arrange to come into the office with your phone and identity documents and we can help you apply.

How do I apply for a DIN?

To establish a director ID, you will need to verify your identity and ensure that this information matches the records held by the ATO. To do this simply follow these 3-steps.

Step 1 – Set-up a myGovID

If you already have a myGovID go to Step 2.

To establish your director ID online, and you have not already set up myGovID, you will need to download the app onto your phone or device and create an account.

If you do not have a phone or device on which to create your MyGovID then go to Step 3.

The myGovID does not create your director ID –  the app’s only purpose is to validate your identity, and once validated, issue a code that can be used to identify you on government online services without going through the same verification process.

myGovID uses your phone/device’s camera to scan your forms of identification such as your passport, driver’s licence and/ or visa to validate who you say you are. Be careful when you are scanning your documentation as the system does not always read the scan correctly.

You will need a myGovID with a standard or strong identity strength using two Australian identity documents, such as:

  • Driver’s licence or learner’s permit
  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Visa (using foreign passport providing still in Australia)
  • Citizenship certificate
  • ImmiCard
  • Medicare card
Step 2 – Apply for your director ID through ABRS

Once you have set up your myGovID, you need to apply to the ABRS for your director ID. Use the email you used to create your myGovID to start the process and click on the “Apply now with myGovID” button (see below).

In addition to your myGovID, you will need to have on hand documentation that matches the information held by the ATO. You will need:

  • Your tax file number
  • The residential address held on file by the ATO; and
  • Two documents that verify your identity such as:
  • Your bank account details held by the ATO (on your myGov ATO account, see ‘my profile/financial institution details’)
  • Dividend statement investment reference number
  • Notice of assessment (NOA) – date of issue and the reference number (on your myGov ATO account, see Tax/lodgements/income tax/history)
  • The gross amount from your PAYG payment summary
  • Superannuation details including your super fund’s ABN and your member account number

The final stage requests your personal contact details (not the company’s). Your myGovID details and ATO details will be prefilled and all you need to do is enter your place of birth, postal address, mobile number, any former names and complete the declaration.

The application process should take less than 5 minutes and once complete, you will instantly receive your DIN. This information should be provided to us via email to Hello@nortons.com.au

Step 3 – Applying by phone or using paper forms

If you do not have a suitable phone or device or can’t get a myGovID with a standard or strong identity strength, you can apply by phone or with a paper form.

You can apply by phone if you have:

  • An Australian TFN
  • The information needed to verify your identity (as listed above)

The phone number is 13 62 50 and is available between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday for directors in Australia.

If you can’t apply online or over the phone, you can apply using a downloadable form ‘Application for a director identification number’ (NAT 75329). This is a slower process and you will also need to provide certified copies of your documents to verify your identity.
